"I got the DonJoy knee brace about a month ago and the difference is night and day. I’m able to walk and bike once again. I saw an immediate change to the stability of my knee, even stairs are not so daunting to face anymore. I’m very happy to be mobile once more. Even dancing all night no longer proves to be a problem. Most difficult part of getting my brace was the colour / pattern choice. I’d highly recommend this type of brace. By the way my knee injury consists of a blown ACL and severely damaged meniscus!"

Graston Technique® Treatment For Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is heel pain that is caused by inflammation of the tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot and connects the toes to the heel. Inflammation tends to occur when that band of tissue is overused or overstretched. This condition can become chronic and be painful to the extent that normal activities cannot be enjoyed and walking becomes a challenge.

Those who are more likely to get plantar fasciitis are those who have arch problems (flat feet and high arches), runners, tight Achilles tendon, wearing shoes with poor support or soft soles and those who experience rapid weight gain.

Graston Technique®

The Graston Technique® has rapidly become the treatment of choice by many health practitioners and this technique is part of the curriculum at almost thirty colleges and universities across North America.

Research on this innovative technique started in the mid 1990’s and it didn’t take long before athletes were using this method of treatment with soft tissue injuries. Michael Phelps, an American swimming Olympian has spoken highly of how The Graston Technique® has helped him.

Graston Technique® And Plantar Fasciitis

Successful treatment of plantar fasciitis involves stretching the tendons, muscles, and fascia of the foot and calf muscle. The Graston Technique® is a proven method of successfully stretching these tissues and muscles affected by plantar fasciitis. Getting the range of motion back and reducing pain as quickly as possible is important.

This technique uses instruments made from stainless steel that the therapist uses over the affected area. There are a variety of instruments available to the trained therapist, all are shaped and weighted differently so that depending on the area being treated, the best instrument is used. In order to properly treat plantar fasciitis an instrument is used along the large muscle In the calf, another in the bulge in the heel area on the arch side and another in the small area where the big toes connects to the foot.

The therapist presses the instrument into the affected area and moves it across the area in need of treatment. Many patients may have scar tissue that also causes some pain and this treatment method deals with these problems also. When the therapist manipulates the instrument across an area, there may be a bumpy area felt, this is either scar tissue or an adhesion. During Graston Technique® treatment, the gentle pulling across the tissue helps to break up the scar tissue or adhesions which free the tissue for improving the range of motion. Many patients find that during the course of their treatment they can resume activities

If you suffer with plantar fasciitis this type of rehabilitation therapy will get you back to normal activities quickly. Chiro-Med Rehab Centre has a convenient location and qualified health professionals to help you get on the road to recovery. Visit Chiro-Med online or call 905-918-0419 for more information on the Graston Technique®.

Can Kyphosis (Hunchback) Be Treated?

Kyphosis is the technical name for having a hunched back that is not remedied by naturally straightening the back. Of course we all get lazy at times and slouch to the point it appears we are hunchbacked; however, kyphosis is a condition in which an individual has an exaggerated thoracic curve and rounded shoulders. This is a condition that is on the increase.

There are causes to this condition with the two most common causes being poor posture and muscular imbalances. When caused by poor posture this condition is known as postural kyphosis. Kyphosis can affect anyone at any age except newborns.

In addition to poor posture and muscular imbalances other possible causes include:

  • upper back muscle weakness
  • arthritis
  • bone degeneration diseases
  • spine injury
  • slipped discs
  • spinal curvature (scoliosis)
  • aging

Although much less common there are other causes that may lead to kyphosis, these include:

  • tumours
  • infection in the spine
  • Paget’s disease
  • muscular dystrophy
  • birth defects

Many people live with kyphosis and rarely seek out treatment. If any individual with this condition experiences breathing difficulties, pain or fatigue then it is really important to get treatment. Pretty much all of our mobility and flexibility depends on the health of our spine. Seeking treatment to help correct kyphosis is important to help reduce the risk of complications later in life.

Postural kyphosis will more than likely cause further trouble down the road. Even if an individual experiences shallow breathing or slight, occasional pain it is imperative they seek treatment.

Treating kyphosis early by strengthening the back muscles and seeking out chiropractic adjustments will help.

Other Types of Kyphosis:

Congenital kyphosis refers to abnormal development of the spine that is inherited. This means a person is born with a defect, such as the incomplete formation of the spine. This can lead to a severe abnormal kyphosis.

Paralysis can lead to kyphosis. Causes of the paralysis can include spinal muscle atrophy or cerebral palsy. The development of kyphosis in these cases is gradual.

Degenerative kyphosis refers to the wear and tear of the lumbar (lower) spine. Over a period of time the degenerative process can cause the collapse of the intervertebral disc and weakening of the spinal ligaments. Once kyphosis begins to form it gradually gets worse.

Scheuermann's kyphosis occurs in children and the thoracic curve is usually 45 and 75 degrees.

Exercises that Can Help

Here are four exercises that can help you if done on a regular basis:

  • Lay Down Y

This exercise will strengthen the extension muscles in the upper back.

How to do it: Lie face down with your head lifted off the floor. Your lower back needs to be slightly hyper-extended. Stretch your arms straight out in a Y position with your thumbs pointing up. Pull your arms back in an arc until your hands are in a ‘handcuff’ position. Slowly reverse your arms until you’re at the start. Repeat 2 or 3 times.

  • Wall Sliding (wall angels)

This exercise will strengthen the scapular retractors and will provide good shoulder mobility.

How to do it: Stand with your back against a wall but take one small step forward. Hold your arms out in the shape of a W with your hands facing up. Push your hands up toward the wall until they reach a Y position. Return your arms to the W position. Repeat 5 times.

  • T-Spine Rotation

Thoracic spine rotations are essential for increasing mobility in the thoracic spine region (where the kyphosis affects).

How to do it: Get on all fours making sure your arms are at full length and your hands are positioned just in front of your shoulders. Take your right arm and stretch out your arm. Slowly move your arm underneath your body (and slow twist at the waist) until your arm is as far through as possible and you are looking at the palm of your right hand. Slowly reverse. Do 3 of these then repeat with the other arm.

  • Crucifix

Spending too much time in a seated position causes lower and upper back muscles to shorten which leads to poor posture. This stretch helps to undo these shortened muscles.

How to do it: Stand tall with your arms extended straight out to your sides at shoulder height. Turn your wrists so your thumbs face backwards and pull your (straight) arms up over your head. Bend your elbows until your elbow is at a 90 degree angle. Lower your left hand until it touches your shoulder. Take your right hand and place it on the left elbow. Lower your left hand as far as you can go and hold for as long as you can. Slowly release. Repeat 2 times then switch to your other arm. Do this exercise several times a day.

Chiropractic Treatment for Kyphosis

Treatment will depend on a couple of factors such as the severity and the underlying cause. For those in which the cause is poor posture the good news is that aggressive treatments are not required. What may be required includes:

  • physical therapy
  • correction of the spinal joint fixations
  • yoga (to help build strength and range of motion)

If the cause of kyphosis is due to an infection then antibiotics may be required. If tumours are the underlying cause then surgery may be required.

Children and Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors have cared for children for over a century. Many parents are surprised when they learn that many common childhood ailments respond well to this natural form of health care.

Chiropractic care is complex yet in simplest terms is when there is dysfunction in the spine and its joints it can lead to dysfunction in the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS coordinates and controls all the body’s systems so even if there is some minor issue in the spine, it can create a host of negative effects throughout the entire body. Children are no different from adults when it comes to suffering with dysfunctions in the spine or joints.

A child actually goes through many physical stresses throughout their growing years. Many children attain their full height without any issues and others experience some troubles along the way. If your child appears to be uncomfortable or complains about their back or joints then seeking chiropractic care can help.

The first challenge a growing spine endures is in utero. Many parents are aware that foetal positions such as breech, transverse, brow, etc., can cause problems with the development of the baby’s spine. Spinal segments can be forced out of place by the position of the baby while in utero. It has been shown that if the baby’s position is less than optimal it can result in a longer and more difficult time while making the journey through the birth canal.

Many parents are aware of common problems in newborns such as colic, sleep disturbances, infections, reflux, breastfeeding difficulties and more. These are often traced to an irritated nervous system caused by spinal and cranial misalignments.

Significant spinal trauma can occur at, or prior to birth and as a result many parents choose to have their baby’s spine checked once he or she is born. Learning to hold up the head, sitting upright, crawling, and walking are all milestone activities that are affected by spinal alignment. As a child grows there are so many factors that come into play that warrant a chiropractic check. Some of these factors include carrying heavy backpacks, sports injuries, falls, and sitting all day in school (lack of physical activity in the day). Any one of these is a form of physical stress that can affect the child’s spine and central nervous system.

What Does a First Visit Look Like?

It is really important for a chiropractor to gather as much history as possible about your child’s health. A complete examination of the spine will be conducted and the chiropractor will use gentle techniques to locate and adjust problem areas. At no time will the examination or adjustment cause pain; it is a very gentle procedure (unless there is an injury).

Each child is different so the chiropractic care is specific to each child.

Generally speaking, spinal adjustments for infants and young children are nothing more than a very light fingertip pressure to correct misalignments in the spine. The child will not feel force, he or she will basically feel a ‘finger touch’. In most cases this is all that is needed to restore mobility to spinal joints which have become stiff or locked. Other techniques may involve the use of hand-held instruments which can provide gentle correction.

Chiropractic care for children is usually painless, except in cases where a child has a physical injury. In these cases the child may be sensitive to any touch; however, once the adjustment has been made the area can effectively heal.

How Long Are Treatments?

Children tend to heal faster than adults and this is true in chiropractic care as well. There is no definitive answer to this question because each child is different and the conditions also play a factor in determining how many treatments are required.

Does My Child Have a Problem?

It isn’t always obvious that a child may need chiropractic care. Some symptoms include restricted head movement, one shoulder appears higher than the other, one leg appears longer than the other, disturbed sleeping patterns, or breastfeeding difficulties.

Many childhood disorders are often linked to spinal troubles. Some of these include bed wetting, headaches, colic, reflux, recurrent ear infections, scoliosis, ADHD, persistent sore throats and olds, and even constipation.

Lateral Epicondylitis AKA Tennis Elbow

Lateral epicondylitis is a physical health condition more commonly referred to as tennis elbow. This painful condition has affected many people and it involves the tendons that attach to the bone on the outside part of the elbow. Tendons anchor muscles to bone. The muscle involved in this condition, the extensor carpi radialis brevis, is what is felt when tennis elbow strikes.

Degeneration of the tendon's attachment is what happens with lateral epicondylitis; the weakening places enormous stress on this area. Eventually this leads to pain when involved with activities in which this muscle is used such as lifting, gripping, and grasping. Tennis is usually associated with this condition but the problem can occur when participating in many different types of athletic or non-athletic activities. The good news is that the qualified professional staff at Chiro-Med Rehab Centre in Richmond Hill can help.

Causes Of Lateral Epicondylitis

There are numerous causes of lateral epicondylitis that are work and leisure-related. Any activity that places enormous or repetitive stress on the tendon attachments causes tennis elbow. These stresses can come from holding too large a grip or from repetitive gripping activities. This can include painting, meat cutting, window washing with a squeegee and much more.

Another cause can be when the area receives a direct blow that results in the swelling of the tendon and this can lead to degeneration. A sudden and extreme action, activity or force can also injure the tendon.

Although this condition affects many people between 30 and 50 years of age, it can occur in any age group.

Symptoms Of Lateral Epicondylitis

Pain is usually the primary reason that patients seek out medical evaluation. The pain is located over the outside area of the elbow, over the bone area which is known as the lateral epicondyle. When you have tennis elbow, this area becomes tender to touch. Pain also occurs by any activity which places stress on the tendon, such as gripping or lifting. With activity, tennis elbow pain generally starts at the elbow and can travel down the forearm to the hand. Depending on the severity, any motion of the elbow can become painful.

Treatment Of Lateral Epicondylitis

The good news is that there are non-surgical treatment options. The most common form of treatment is simply limiting or eliminating aggravating activity. Total rest in some cases is not recommended. Modifying how you grip items can also help.

A brace may be required to reduce the tension on the tendon in order to allow it time to heal properly.

Physical therapy plays a large role in the treatment of tennis elbow. A physiotherapist can provide stretching and strengthening exercises to help treat this condition. Also, modalities such as ultrasound, laser or cryotherapy treatment can be used. In some cases anti-inflammatories may be required.

Only in severe cases is surgery considered. The pain must be incapacitating and the patient has not been able to respond well to conservative care. Surgery should never be an option unless severe pain has been ongoing for many weeks.

Like so many other health conditions, it is very important to diagnose lateral epicondylitis as soon as possible. The sooner tennis elbow is treated, the faster the patient can resume their daily activities.

Chiro-Med Medical Centre has the necessary expertise and knowledge to help you recover from lateral epicondylitis. As professionals we can recommend the type of treatment needed and effectively implement that treatment, getting you back up and running as quick as possible! No two patients are identical and neither is treatment. We ensure that you get a treatment plan tailor-made for your abilities. Chiro-Med Medical Centre in Richmond Hill looks forward to helping you resume activities you enjoy!

Concussion Management

Concussions are a form of mild traumatic brain injuries that are caused as a result of a blow to the head, neck, body or face that disrupts normal functions of the brain. Many people are of the belief that the loss of consciousness is a common element of concussions of which it is not; it can happen but it is not that common. A mild traumatic brain injury can leave psychological and physical effects that may not be apparent right away; sometimes symptoms may not appear until days or weeks later.

Concussion Symptoms

There are several indicators and symptoms that a person may experience if they have a concussion. Keep in mind though that these signs may immediately develop or they may not surface for hours, days and possibly weeks. Age is something to consider because in children the signs may be more subtle.

Symptoms may include:

  • Pressure in the head or a headache.
  • Feeling confused or in a daze.
  • Ringing sounds in the ear.
  • Amnesia.
  • Dizziness, nausea or vomiting for no other apparent reason.
  • Speech is slurred.
  • Unable to answer a simple question quickly.
  • Fatigue.
  • Temporary loss of consciousness.
  • Loss of concentration and memory.
  • Irritability.
  • Heightened sensitivity to noise and/or light.
  • Inability to get a good sleep at night.
  • Depression.
  • Taste and smell may be altered.

Should any of these symptoms appear after a head injury (child, youth or adult) then be sure to seek emergency care:

  • Continuous vomiting.
  • Loss of consciousness lasting more than 30 seconds.
  • Headaches that persist and get worse.
  • Changes in behaviour such as physical coordination, stumbling or clumsiness.
  • Seizures.
  • Confused or disoriented as well as having difficulty recognizing people or places
  • Slurred speech or other changes in speech
  • Vision disturbances including dilated pupils or pupils that are unequal in size.
  • Dizziness does not go away.
  • Large bumps on the head or bruises on other areas of the head in young children, especially in infants.

Canadian Government

The Government of Canada recognizes that concussions are a serious concern among those participating in sports and recreation activities, especially youth. Concussions in sport are a recognized public health issue because of their frequency and their potential short and long-term consequences. For example:

  • 64% of emergency hospital visits among 10-18 year-olds are related to participation in sports and other recreational activities.
  • Among children and youth (10-18 years) who visit an emergency department for a sports-related head injury, 39 percent were diagnosed with concussions; another 24 percent were possible concussions.
  • Between 2004 and 2014 football, soccer and hockey have all shown a greater than 40% increase in rates of reported head injury for children and youth.

Vertigo Can Be Treated

Vertigo is a condition in which you feel dizzy or off-balance, as if you or your surroundings are swaying, spinning or moving. This can be a temporary or long term condition that affects men and women of all ages but is most common among the elderly.

Causes of Vertigo

The vestibular system (a tiny grid of fluid-filled sacs and tubes) is an organ in our ears. There are two identical vestibular systems located in each ear. As we move around the liquid in the tubes also moves and our nerve cells read the levels. This information is transmitted to the brain which calculates which way is down and what should be horizontal.

Balance problems originate in the vestibular system so those who are afflicted with frequent vertigo are said to have vestibular disorder.  Balance problems may be associated with the loss of hearing or ringing in the ears. Changes in our brain may trigger vertigo as well.

Major causes of vertigo include:

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: This can be triggered by moving your head into a certain position or a simple movement of the head. BPPV is the most common form of vertigo.
  • Calcium deposits in the ear canal can become dislodged causing vertigo.
  • Head trauma: Those who have experienced a massive hit to the head can experience damage to the inner ear which can trigger vertigo.
  • Labyrinthitis: Bacterial infections in the middle ear that are left untreated can also cause vertigo and possibly even hearing loss.

Some antibiotics have been known to damage the vestibular system due to high doses or with prolonged use. Acetylsalicylic acid, caffeine, alcohol, sedatives, and tranquilizers can cause temporary dizziness but generally do not cause permanent damage.

Vertigo Symptoms

Vertigo is the main symptom of a balance disorder. If you close your eyes and feel as though you are falling or you are spinning then this is vertigo. Severe vertigo can impede your ability to walk and make you feel nauseous.

The vestibular system is linked to the brain's movement centre and to the eyes, and when there are problems with this system then vision can be affected. In addition, there may be aching muscles in the neck and back.

Other symptoms people experience during episodes of vertigo include memory problems or struggling to read. Often people find vertigo tiring, so much so they have to rest. Symptoms can last from a few moments to hours.

The symptoms of bacterial labyrinthitis are typically an ear infection followed by a significant loss of hearing and extreme vertigo which can last for weeks.

Dealing with or Avoiding Vertigo Triggers

There is plenty a person can do to help themselves if they are prone to experiencing vertigo. Avoiding alcohol, cigarettes, fried foods and excessive salt can trigger vertigo.

Vitamin B6 and ginkgo biloba may help in reducing vertigo. If an individual has a blood sugar imbalance then chromium may help ease the effects of vertigo. Also, getting lots of exercise, meditation, and sufficient sleep all go a long way to treating vertigo.

Also, a chiropractor can develop an appropriate program specifically tailored for you to help treat vertigo.

Vertigo and Chiropractic Care

If you suffer with vertigo and are searching for help then consider chiropractic care. Even if you’ve not experienced any neck or head trauma then the symptoms you’re experiencing may be the result of an upper cervical joint dysfunction.

This form of treatment is not for everyone who has vertigo; some individuals may not respond well to this but a chiropractor is the best person to determine this.  There are some exercises that just may work but again, a chiropractor can determine this.

Treating BPPV

Treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo dizziness is simple, but must be done in a precise manner, determined by which canal is filled with debris. Careful testing is done first to determine how much debris and where it lays. Once treatment is completed there may be some level of discomfort and it is generally recommended that patients do not drive themselves home.

If you are experiencing persistent vertigo it’s best not to take chances. Call Chiro-Med Rehab Centre.

Chiropractic Care For Ongoing Back Pain

Although most people experience occasional back pain or injury at some point in their lives, there are some who suffer from back pain on a continuous basis.  A Richmond Hill chiropractor can provide professional treatment for all types of back pain, whether it is occasional pain or an ongoing problem.

Ongoing back pain can have a variety of causes, many of them environmental.  A Richmond Hill chiropractor can correct the problem, but part of the treatment is identifying the source of the pain and taking steps to eliminate it.  Poor posture can be caused by excess body weight, uncomfortable shoes, or standing or sitting in the same position for long periods of time.  Many types of mattresses can also cause back pain.  If you wake up every morning with a sore back, it is a good indication that your mattress is not supporting your spine properly, and you may want to try a different type of sleep surface.  Often mattresses that are too soft do not support the body well enough, allowing the heavier parts of the body to sag and putting strain on the spine.  Lower back pain is one of the most common types of back pain, and it is one that often results in a visit to a chiropractor.

When you visit a Richmond Hill chiropractor, your initial visit will involve an assessment of your condition.  This will include an analysis of the type of pain that you are experiencing as well as an overall examination of your spinal alignment.  This will allow the chiropractor to recommend the right type of treatment for your condition.  Together, you and your chiropractor can work together to address some of the issues that are causing your back pain to allow you to get the most out of your treatment.

Low Back Pain & Core Stability Training

If you experience low back pain and struggle to understand why, then this may help shed some light on your situation. Many of us have heard on television commercials about core strength or core training, but what exactly do these terms mean and why is there a push to strengthen our core muscles?
Let’s start off with defining core strength. This is not about getting a six-pack of abs or having a rock hard belly; core strength is about keeping your core muscles in shape as a preventative to injury.

Core muscles are the muscles that form around the trunk of the body. The more common core muscles include:

  • Transverse abdominis: This is located under the obliques. It is the deepest of the waist muscles and this helps to keep the spine stable and protected.
  • Internal obliques: These are located under the external obliques.
  • Pelvic floor muscles: The pelvic floor is a hammock of pelvic floor muscles that connect the pubis bone at the front to the tailbone (coccyx) and sitz bones at the back.
  • Multifidis muscles: This area is under the erector spinae (a group of 3 muscles that extend from the lower back to the neck) and runs along the vertebral column. These muscles rotate and extend the spine.

There are other core muscles that include: hip adductors, hip flexors, as well as the gluteus medius, minimus and maximus.

Weak Core Muscles And Reoccurring Back Pain

The abdominals are only a small portion of what makes up the core. Weak or unbalanced core muscles are often linked to severe back pain. Weak core muscles can also result in a loss of good posture and this means eventually there will be pain.

When core muscles are kept toned through core exercises, they stabilize the spine area, as well as the neck and shoulder. All movements originate from the center of the body so keeping these toned is crucial. Before you’re able to do any quick or powerful movement, your spine has to be stable and balanced from the core; if not, and it is weak, and a quick movement occurs, injury can occur. Core exercises develop functional fitness and this is highly beneficial to help with regular activities.

Weak Core Muscles And Back Muscle Spasms

When an individual has a weak core this can lead to the global muscles working harder than they should. Global muscles are large torque-producing muscles that produce a flexing motion. They act on the spine and the trunk without direct attachment. The global muscles are the rectus abdominis and the external oblique. So a weak core exerts pressure on the global muscles which results in regular muscle spasms.

If you have a lack of core development then this means you have a predisposition to injury. When core muscles are weak, putting them to work feels like hard work.  For example, it is easier to slouch than to sit straight – slouching weakens the core muscles. It also creates a shift in the natural alignment of the spine putting continuous pressure on the spinal column and all the core muscles surrounding it.  Before long, muscles become imbalanced (some over stretched and others shortened) and create deviations in the spine that produce chronic back pain

Developed core muscles help you react faster and stronger, and they allow your body distribute stress evenly and absorb shock effectively. In turn, your chances of back pain or injury are greatly minimized.

Developing Core Strength

In order to develop any muscle you have to use it. There are many exercises you can do, the best way to start is through bracing exercises.

Getting that perfect posture is very important. The more centered your spine is in relation to the rest of your body, the more erect you'll sit and stand. Strong lower-back and abdominal muscles help you to even sit at a desk all day. (If you sit several hours at a desk every day, try ditching your chair for a stability ball; sitting on this does wonders for developing and maintaining core strength.)

There is much more you can do to strengthen your core muscles. Chiro-Med Rehab Centre in Richmond Hill has qualified staff to help you regardless of whether you already have a back injury and need treatment or if you need advice on getting your core strength increased.
